The hero’s journey is a storytelling template identified by mythologist Joseph Campbell, who found that myths across the world share the same underlying pattern: a hero leaves the ordinary world, faces trials and transformation, and returns changed. Campbell called it the monomyth.
The three acts of the monomyth
In The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), Campbell distilled the world’s myths into one arc with three great movements: Departure, Initiation, and Return. Later writers expanded these into 12 stages.
The 12 stages of the hero’s journey
- 1. The Ordinary World — the hero’s normal life before the story.
- 2. The Call to Adventure — a challenge or quest appears.
- 3. Refusal of the Call — fear and hesitation.
- 4. Meeting the Mentor — guidance and preparation arrive.
- 5. Crossing the Threshold — the hero commits and enters the unknown.
- 6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies — the new world’s rules are learned.
- 7. The Approach — nearing the central ordeal.
- 8. The Ordeal — the greatest fear or crisis; a symbolic death.
- 9. The Reward — the hero seizes the prize or insight.
- 10. The Road Back — returning toward the ordinary world.
- 11. The Resurrection — a final test that transforms the hero.
- 12. Return with the Elixir — the hero brings something back to benefit others.
Why the hero’s journey feels universal
Campbell drew directly on Jung: the recurring figures of the journey — the mentor, the threshold guardian, the shadow enemy — are archetypes, which is why the pattern shows up everywhere from ancient myth to modern film. Stories from Sisyphus to the Greek myths carry pieces of it.
The journey as inner transformation
The hero’s journey isn’t only a plot device — it’s a map of personal growth. The “ordeal” is any crisis that forces you to change; the “return” is coming back wiser.
